Hill Dickinson: Widening Access to a Career in Law

Leading commercial law firm, Hill Dickinson, has transformed its traditional approach to graduate recruitment and adopted a new blended assessment process designed to build a fairer and more diverse workforce of the future.

Working in partnership with Amberjack, early careers recruitment specialists, the firm has replaced its traditional multi-stage, hurdled approach to recruitment with an assessment process based around the ability to identify and measure a candidate’s potential.

Using Amberjack’s award-winning Future Potential Blended Assessment tool, candidates are instead scored on four key criteria: Applied Intellect, Creative Force, Digital Mindset, and Grit.

The blended assessment integrates situational judgement, cognitive ability and behavioural items into an immersive and scenario-based assessment that provides a realistic view of working life in a commercial law firm. The assessment is followed by an integrated video interview after which candidates are provided with feedback on how they performed and ideas for development.

Explaining why Hill Dickinson has chosen to reassess its recruitment methodology, HR director Carolyn Morgan said: “As a forward-thinking business, we constantly review our processes and actively look to improve. We knew there must be a better, more efficient, way of recruiting future talent into our business that would also open up the possibility of a career in law to candidates from all backgrounds. Amberjack’s Future Potential Blended Assessment tool will help ensure that our processes are fairer and more inclusive, that candidates feel engaged and informed throughout and, most importantly, that we are able to identify those individuals that are right for our firm.”

Martin Kavanagh, Head of Assessment at Amberjack, said: ‘We’re really excited to be working with Hill Dickinson and supporting the firm in its ambition to provide a more inclusive and efficient process. Our Future Potential Assessment will help them to better identify talent for their organisation while providing candidates with an improved experience.’

Hill Dickinson’s new blended approach to recruitment enables candidates to better demonstrate their full range of skills and capabilities while reducing the number of stages in the process and making it more efficient.
